An American tourist is now safe after being rescued from inside a famously deadly volcano crater in Italy over the weekend.
According to Italian media, the 23-year-old fell several feet into Mount Vesuvius while trying to get his phone back after it slipped out of his hand while he was taking a selfie. He actually started to climb into the crater when he fell. Mountain guides rescued the man with a helicopter and he was treated for minor injuries.
The tourist and his three relatives took a prohibited route up the mountain and are now facing charges. Mount Vesuvius is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world by experts. Its eruption in 79 AD buried the city of Pompeii.
