Doug Mastriano Wins GOP Nomination for Pa. Governor, Will Face Democrat Josh Shapiro

Lt. Gov. John Fetterman is the projected winner of Pennsylvania’s Democratic primary election for U.S. Senate.

State Senate President Pro Tempore Jake Corman, R-Bellefonte, is temporarily assuming the duties of acting lieutenant governor as John Fetterman undergoes a procedure to implant a pacemaker, Gov. Tom Wolf said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon.

Voters in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Kentucky, Idaho and Oregon cast their ballots yesterday to pick their party nominees for the 2022 midterms. High-profile Senate races in the swing states of Pennsylvania and North Carolina have captured national attention, with control of the 50-50 chamber on the line in November. There are also a number of US House races that could determine whether Democrats continue to hold their five-seat majority. In Pennsylvania, the Republican primary battle was neck-and-neck early this morning as Mehmet Oz, the celebrity doctor backed by former President Donald Trump, and Dave McCormick, a former hedge fund executive, continue to battle for the top spot. The winner of that race will face Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, who cruised to victory in the Democratic primary despite being hospitalized after suffering a stroke days earlier.

More ballots are being counted today from the busiest primary election so far this year.  Five states voted yesterday and four will have Senate showdowns this November.  But two of them are still too close to call.  That includes the GOP nomination in Pennsylvania and Oregon.

Sticker shock is soaring at the pump.  Gas prices jumped another four cents overnight.  Triple-A puts the new national average at four-56 a gallon.  California continues to have it worst, topping six-bucks.  Next is Hawaii, followed by Nevada, Washington, Alaska and Oregon.

Twitter says it plans to complete its 44-billion dollar deal with Elon Musk.  The social media giant made that clear in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission last night.  The board intends to enforce the buyout agreement even as the world’s richest person is hesitating.

The leader of Ukraine is encouraging filmmakers to stand up for free speech.  He gave a video address at last night’s Cannes [[ can ]] Film Festival in France.  He said cinema is always on the side of freedom.  His comments come as the war against Russia nears three months.

A man is dead after a hole he was digging on a New Jersey beach collapsed.  The 18-year-old was digging the hole with his younger sister near Chadwick Beach.  Emergency crews were able to rescue the sister but the man couldn’t be saved.
