Get ready for six more weeks of winter. Punxsutawney Phil just made that Groundhog Day prediction after seeing his shadow. He’s predicted winter more than 100 times since the tradition began in 1886. The event at Gobbler’s Knob drew its biggest crowd ever this morning after going virtual last year.

Other states use their own groundhog but the event in Michigan has been delayed until Saturday because of a snow storm. Beware before heading to the airport today.  More flights are being canceled as a winter storm begins to stretch two-thousand miles across the nation.

Penn State COVID cases see significant drop but remain high, following local and statewide trends.

Centre County Commissioners are gearing up to vote on whether to extend the fee for local use that that is set to sunset this year.

The fee for local use is the $5 vehicle registration fee that the commissioners enacted in 2017 through the ACT 89 transportation bill. In 2021, Centre County received roughly $600,000 in fee for local use revenue.

The free COVID-19 testing site in Centre County will continue to operate through at least the end of next week, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Testing will continue until at least until Saturday, Feb. 12 at the Centre County Recycling & Refuse Authority Interpretive Center, 253 Transfer Road, department officials said in a news release on Monday. It previously had been scheduled to end on Jan. 29.

The Penn State women’s golf team concluded the Big Ten Match Play Tournament with a 4-2 win over Rutgers on Tuesday morning.

Penn State Nittany Lion wrestler Max Dean (Lowell, Mich.) has been named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week for the week ending January 30, 2022. The honor is the first for Dean and the third for Penn State this year.

NHL – The Penguins lost in an OT S/O to Washington, 4-3. The Flyers defeated Winnipeg, 3-1.

Tom Brady has confirmed he’s retiring after 22 years in the NFL. Of course, it came a day after he said he really wasn’t sure when he’d step away from the game. In a lengthy statement, Brady said in part he’s “not going to make that competitive commitment anymore.” For the record, Brady is a seven-time Super Bowl champion, the last one coming as quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Still, the bulk of his career – and his Super Bowl wins were with the New England Patriots…who he didn’t mention in his remarks.

The Washington Football Team will now be known as the Washington Commanders. The team revealed its new name today.

The NFL and the New York Giants are responding to a lawsuit by a former Dolphins coach.
