Many stores are open Christmas Eve to accommodate last-minute shoppers.  Don’t put off your shopping for too long, though, because many retailers are having reduced hours today.  Walmart, Best Buy and other retail chains will be closing by 6pm, and many grocery stores will be closing early, too.  Most banks will still have regular hours, and the Postal Service says mail will be delivered on its regular schedule.  The stock markets will be closed today.

Airlines are canceling more Christmas Eve flights as the omicron COVID variant takes off.  Airlines have canceled more than 18-hundred flights today, and are delaying more than 22-hundred.  Delta and United said Thursday they had to cancel dozens of flights because of a pilot shortage brought on by the omicron surge.  Bad weather also is forcing flight delays and cancellations.  This comes as Triple-A is forecasting air travel nearly tripling over last year.

Gas prices are dropping for the fourth day in a row.  Triple-A reports the national average price for regular is now under three dollars and 29 cents a gallon.  The price is down more than a dime a gallon over the past month.

Triple-A says travel numbers are on par with the pre-pandemic record year of 2019.  They estimate more than 109-million Americans will travel over the long Christmas and New Year’s week.  More than 100-million are expected to drive, despite high gas prices.  Nearly six-and-a-half million are expected to fly.  And if you’re flying today, you’ll want to make sure to check on the status of your flight ahead of time as several airlines are already scrapping flights amid a surge in COVID cases and uncooperative weather.

Christmas Eve is here and that means Santa is on the move.  NORAD, the North American Aerospace Defense Command, is tracking his progress as it has done every year since 1955.  Santa begins delivering presents in the South Pacific, then heads west until he wraps up in Canada, the U.S., Mexico and South America.  And he moves fast, stopping at nearly 400-thousand homes a minute.  You can track his journey on NORAD’s website, the official NORAD Tracks Santa app or by calling the hotline at 1-877-HI-NORAD.
