Neeli Bendapudi will become Penn State’s 19th president, in what multiple members of the Board of Trustees on Thursday called a “historic” appointment for the university. President of the University of Louisville for the past three and a half years, Bendapudi’s appointment as Penn State’s next leader was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees in a special meeting on Thursday morning. Bendapudi succeeds Eric Barron, who previously announced plans to retire at the end of his contract in June 2022.

The jury has spoken: Jussie Smollett has been found guilty of staging his own racist and homophobic attack in Chicago three years ago. The former “Empire” actor, who is Black and gay, was convicted on five of the six counts he faced. The jury deliberated for more than nine hours. In the wake of the verdict, The judge has allowed him to go free until his next scheduled court hearing, which has been set for January 27th. While Smollett faces up to three years in prison, most legal experts say it’s more likely he’ll be placed on probation and be ordered to perform community service.

The death toll is rising from one of the worst road accidents in Mexico in years.  At least 54 people lost their lives when the truck they were in overturned on a curve yesterday.  Local officials say more than 100 men, women and children were inside, mostly migrants from nearby Guatemala.  But there are reports the number could have been as high as 200, with some passengers running of after the crash.  Police say the driver was speeding.

Simone Biles is named Time Magazine’s Athlete of the Year:  This year, TIME’s “Athlete of The Year” ironically receives the accolade for NOT performing.

It’s a controversial choice, even though TIME selected four-time Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles for the honor. Biles famously pulled out of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after struggling with mental health issues, including the “Twisties” – in which a gymnast becomes disoriented while in the air. At the time, Biles explained, “I have to focus on my mental health and not jeopardize my health and well-being.” She was widely celebrated by fellow athletes and fans across the country for putting a spotlight on mental health.

Former Denver Bronco Demaryius Thomas was Found Dead at 33. The wide receiver announced his retirement from professional football in June of this year. No cause of death has been released, but police indicate it was a medical issue. He was found dead in his home.
