Will drinking help you get in shape? Recent studies suggest that beer, or any alcohol for that matter, when consumed in moderation, may be a motivator to keep people working out – people who drink moderately tend to exercise more than abstainers.
Leigh Leasure, an associate professor and director of the behavioral neuroscience lab at the University of Houston, says theory is that alcohol and exercise both work on the same pathways in the brain, saying “There are a lot of parallels in terms of how the brain responds to exercise and alcohol. The brain releases dopamine and endorphins with both. It does make you wonder if people are feeling good when they exercise and people feel good when they have a drink, maybe they continue to seek out that experience.”
Hmm … dopamine and endorphins from beer, or from 40 minutes sweating at the gym? This is a tough one.
