Study: Vegans Get Worse Hangovers Than Meat-Eaters

If you eat vegan you might want to keep your cocktail consumption lower this holiday season. Utrecht University researchers found people with less nicotinic acid, otherwise known as vitamin B3, and zinc in their diets had more severe hangovers compared with those that had the items in their diet. Low zinc intake, in particular, was “significantly associated” with vomiting, while low nicotinic acid created worse hangover symptoms overall. Doctors say that nicotinic acid and zinc are both needed to break down ethanol, which is in alcohol, so it makes sense that you’d experience a worse hangover if you’re lacking both. Still, experts warn that taking a pill that contains zinc or vitamin B3 isn’t going to necessarily help you avoid a hangover, as it’s not that simple.
