More Than Half of American Men Are Ashamed of Their Body Hair

Over half of men admit to feeling “embarrassed” about their body hair, a survey of 2,000 men has found. 55 percent of all respondents said they felt ashamed of their body hair, with one in five saying they feel this way “often.”

The new study also revealed that this embarrassment may cause some men hesitation when it comes to certain activities. For ex, nearly one-third of men surveyed (31 percent) said they’ve avoided swimming out of embarrassment over their body hair, while another one in four (27 percent) said they’ve avoided the gym.

Startlingly, men are so unconfident in their body hair, nearly one in five feel it’s had a negative impact on their sex life. And while the average guy was found to shave every seven days, according to the results, that doesn’t mean they’re as on top of their grooming routine as they’d like to be.

This is apparent in the results, which also found that six in 10 men have put off shaving their face out of dread or laziness, and 63 percent of those men say their own appearance suffered for it. The survey also found that men aren’t too keen on shaving anything but their face, with 62 percent saying they’ve never shaved their back, and 53 percent saying they’ve never shaved their legs.

Men are most embarrassed by:

Chest hair: 40%

Back hair: 35%

Beer belly: 33%

Acne: 30%

Lack of muscle/build etc.: 27%
