How To Avoid Raising A Materialistic Child

Our society is pretty materialistic– so how do you avoid raising a materialistic child in it? Researchers from the University of Illinois at Chicago studied a sample of more than 900 U.S. adolescents ages 11 to 17, who were asked to complete an online eight-item measure of materialism. The results showed a link between fostering gratitude and its effects on materialism, suggesting that having and expressing gratitude may possibly decrease materialism and increase generosity among adolescents. Study authors suggest materialism can be curbed by having kids keep journals about what they’re grateful for, having the family express what they were grateful for that day at the dinner table, or other similar practices.
