Three Research-Backed Ways To Maximize The Fun Of Leisure Activities

It can be hard to find the time to have fun as an adult, but there are science-backed ways to maximize how much fun you have when you do find the time to work in leisure activities. Selin Malkoc, a time management expert at The Ohio State University says research shows that scheduling can undermine enjoyment if it’s not done right. She says to keep things as fun as possible you should only schedule activities more roughly as having strict beginning and end times makes them feel less fun by “disrupting their free-flowing nature.” Also, don’t schedule something immediately after a leisure activity. Participants in a study said an expected desirable activity (a massage) would be less enjoyable if it occurred before another scheduled activity (meeting friends.) Finally, be present in what you are doing– Malkoc adds, “The key to enjoying your leisure activities is to live in the moment as much as possible. Be spontaneous and don’t live by the calendar.”
