With hot weather just ahead, here’s something we thought you should know: Ice Cream Doesn’t Actually Cool You Down.
You might think a hot day is a good excuse to eat ice cream, (and it is) but then you’d be overestimating the treat’s ability to cool you down. Scientist Peter Poortvliet of the University of Queensland writes for The Conversation that the effect of ice cream’s temperature is rapidly outweighed by the heat generated by digesting it. Instead, he says you should drink small amounts of warm beverages like tea, or eat hot spicy food with chilis, as these will both make you sweat more, and thus cool down. Poortvliet adds, “That’s why [spicy foods] are popular in warm climates.”
