Night Owls More Likely to Die Early

It turns out morning people have at least one advantage over night owls: they have a lower risk of dying. Researchers from the University of Surrey analyzed data on 50,000 people in the U.K. and found those that liked to go to bed late and get up late had a ten percent higher risk of dying over the six-and-a-half year period of the study compared to people who preferred to go to bed early and get up early. Researcher Malcolm von Schantz says, “This is a public health issue that can no longer be ignored. We should discuss allowing evening types to start and finish work later, where practical. And we need more research about how we can help evening types cope with the higher effort of keeping their body clock in synchrony with sun time. “
