House chores are no fun, but it turns out people hate one chore in particular: doing the dishes. The Council of Contemporary Families, a nonprofit dedicated to studying family dynamics, says its important to share dish-washing duties to keep the familial relationships happy. Study lead author Dan Carlson adds, “Doing dishes is gross. There is old, moldy food sitting in the sink. If you have kids, there is curdled milk in sippy cups that smells disgusting,” he goes on to say that doing dishes is also a thankless job, and that data shows women usually do the dishes. Additionally, because doing the dishes has long been labeled a “female” task, women “see themselves as relegated to the tasks that people don’t find desirable.” Carlson suggests couples share the task, or even clean the dishes together, so that women don’t feel stereotyped and don’t always have to take on the worst chore on the list.
