Study: The Best Way To Deal With Embarrassing Situations

Being humiliated is a really terrible feeling, but it turns out you can overcome that feeling through mental training. In a study published in the journal Motivation and Emotion, researchers from Carnegie Melon University had participants respond to an advertisement showing someone accidentally farting in a yoga class. They found participants who were most self-conscious could lessen this feeling when they pictured themselves as observers in the situation, and not as being directly involved in it. Study leader Li Jiang adds, “Embarrassment prevents us from asking advice about what we should do, for example, about our mounting mortgage bills or unplanned pregnancies. In many cases, if we are to help ourselves, and others, we must overcome our fear of embarrassment in social situations.”
