People Enjoy Dinner With Their Friends More If They Put Their Phones Away

You can take a break from your phone, and you’ll likely feel better for doing so. New research from the University of British Columbia reveals people who used their phones while out for dinner with friends and family enjoyed themselves less than those who did not. In an experiment, those who used their phones while at dinner felt more distracted, which reduced how much they enjoyed their meal, and weirdly, left them feeling slightly more bored during the meal. Study senior editor Elizabeth Dunn adds, “An important finding of happiness research is that face-to-face interactions are incredibly important for our day-to-day wellbeing.[…] There is a real and detectable benefit from putting your phone away when you’re spending time with friends and family.” (EurekAlert!
