Millions Of Americans Can’t Stay Home With The Flu, So It Spreads

Staying home when you’re sick is a luxury many Americans don’t have, and it means they spread their illnesses around. Acting director for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Anne Schuchat, recently told reporters, “For those who are already sick, please stay home from work or school. That is such an important recommendation to follow. Otherwise you run the risk of spreading the virus to others– and what may be mild symptoms to you could be deadly to someone else.” But the reality is that Americans who make the least amount of money at work are also the least likely to get paid sick time. A 2009 report from the Center for Economic and Policy Research estimates that at least 40 percent of private-sector workers don’t have paid days off, and more recent estimates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics suggest that number has likely risen to 60 percent. At the same time, scientific data has proven that staying home when you’re sick can stop the spread of the flu and other illnesses. (Pop Sci
