Eight Penn State Prospects Invited to Combine

It was a big day for several Penn State prospects Tuesday. The NFL put out the official list of combine invites Tuesday. Eight former Nittany Lions made the cut. They are.

Marucs Allen – S
Troy Apke – S
Saquon Barkley – RB
Jason Cabinda – LB
Christian Campbell – DB
Mike Gesicki – TE
Grant Haley – CB
DaSean Hamilton – WR

While it was expected that high-profile prospects like Barkley, Gesicki and Allen would be invited to Indianapolis, it is a big moment for lesser-known players like safety Troy Apke who can showcase his speed and athleticism after only one year of starting for the Nittany Lions. Apke has had an impressive off-season so far, being named the MVP of the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl. The Collegiate Bowl is one of the lesser known bowls for prospects to showcase their abilities for NFL scouts.

No player has had as impressive of a drafts season as DaSean Hamilton though. He was a headliner at the East-West Shrine game practices, drawing enough praise and attention that he was invited to the 2018 Reeses Senior Bowl. He again impressed scouts and draft experts in Mobile with his route running and ability to gain separation against defensive backs. While he did have several drops in both games, Hamilton did enough to earn himself an invitation to the Scouting Combine.

At the Combine, players are put through tests of agility, strength, leaping ability and of course speed. For players like Cabinda and Hamilton who have been labeled with less than ideal athleticism by draft scouts it will be an important time to show that they do have the required skills to play in the NFL. Invitees also participate in interviews with teams to assess their mental makeup and personality.

Prospects not invited to the combine include
Saeed Blacknall WR
Brendan Mahon OL
Andrew Nelson OL
Parker Cothren DL
Curtis Cothran DL
Tyrell Chavis DL
Tyler Davis K

The Scouting Combine takes place at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis from February 27th through March 5th.
