Your Towels Are Way Dirtier Than You Think

Go ahead and throw your towels into the wash, they’re grosser than you think. Emily Martin, an assistant professor of epidemiology at the University of Michigan School of Public Health says towels happen to offer the perfect environment for bacteria and other germs to fester because they’re often damp, wet, warm, absorbent, and typically hang in dark bathrooms. Since your hands get germy out in the world you can easily transfer the gross stuff to your towels at home. One study found nearly 90 percent of bathroom towels were contaminated with coliform bacteria, or organisms that indicate the presence of disease-causing germs in water, and 14 percent carried E. coli. Though you likely will not get sick just from touching a towel, your best line of defense is to wash your hands and kitchen and bathroom towels often. (Time)¬†
