Study: Punishing Kids Might Not Stop Them From Misbehaving Again

You may want to cut your kids a break sometimes. A new study out of Germany finds scolding young children may only encourage them to continue with their bad behaviors. Researchers had adult volunteers watch numbers flashing on a screen, and instructed them to hit one of two buttons indicating if the number on the screen was higher or lower than five. However, hitting one of the keys always caused the participant to receive a low electric shock. Scientists assumed once participants knew about the shock they would instead hit the button more slowly, but they actually hit it more quickly. Published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology, the experts say giving a child only the option of punishment for misbehaving encourages them to continue. To change bad behavior you must offer an alternative. (Daily Mail
