Bad At Throwing Stuff Away? Take A Photo First

Getting rid of stuff can be challenging. Some stuff just holds sentimental value even if it has no real use. But there’s a trick that can help you let go: snap a photo. In a new study published in the Journal of Marketing, people who were encouraged to do just that were between 15 and 35 percent more likely to donate sentimental items to charity than those who weren’t prompted to take pictures first. Lead study author Karen Winterich explains, “What people really want is to hold onto [the memories associated with the item.] If they realize they can take a photo of a favorite sweatshirt– or even if they just remember that they already have photos of themselves wearing it– it can make it easier to let go.” (Time
