Why Seeing A Tasty Snack Can Make Your Mouth Water

If seeing a photo of a cheeseburger makes your mouth water you’re not alone. Now scientists have found that “eating with your eyes” is behavior hardwired into the brain and is deeply routed in evolution. Researchers from the National Institute of Genetics in Japan monitored the brains of zebrafish, which have a similar neuron network to humans. They discovered a direct neural link connecting the animal’s prey detector neurons to the hypothalamic feeding center of the brain. This feeding center is what causes hunger pangs when an animal sees prey. Researchers say this response is what keeps humans and other animals alive, as it creates food motivation in juvenile animals who otherwise might not understand what to eat. It’s hoped that in the future, study of this mechanism in humans could lead to treatments for eating disorders. (Daily Mail
