No Matter How Quickly You Talk, You Convey Information At The Same Rate

Are you a fast talker? It turns out it doesn’t matter how quickly or slowly you talk– you still convey information at the same rate. Brown University researchers used two different sources of data on speech that included a total of 398 people. They determined each participant’s information rate, or how much information they conveyed, and speech rate, or how much they said in that time. They found as speech sped up the information rate declined. Also, men tended to convey more information than women at the same speech rate. Study authors say the findings have the potential to shed some light on the way people craft their utterances. (EurekAlert!
