Americans Are Drinking Less Milk, Eating More Cheese

When was the last time you drank milk? Bloomberg News reports that though we’re consuming less milk, on average, we eat twice as much cheese every year as Americans did in 1980, or around 35 pounds each. A dairy advisor from Wisconsin says, “With the beverage market, there’s a lot more choices. But you can’t replace cheese on a pizza.” However the dairy industry just keeps cranking out milk and cheese. Last year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture bought up cheese and distributed it to food banks, and farmers dumped millions of gallons of unsold milk. The oversupply drives prices down, which could be what’s driving people to eat so much cheese. (Consumerist
