Why You Should Never Drink To Forget

Some people drown their negative emotions in alcohol, but new data suggests drinking actually strengthens bad memories. Johns Hopkins University researchers looked at mice to explore the effects of alcohol on fearful responses to memories. Frist, the animals were “fear trained” by being electrically shocked while tones played. The next day they were split into two groups: one got water, and the other got ethanol to drink. Next, researchers attempted to disassociate the mice’s negative response with the tones by playing them without the electric shock. The mice that were given alcohol were much more likely to “freeze” at the sounds than those that were given water. Brain tissue samples showed the mice given alcohol had more receptors along their synapses compared to mice given only water. The findings may impact the treatment for PTSD in humans. (DailyMail
