Grandparents Can Live 5 Extra Years If They Occasionally Care For Their Grandchildren

Having to look after a toddler will keep any adult on their toes, and new research finds grandparents who make time to look after their grandkids could enjoy five extra years of life. A team of international researchers assessed the survival rates of more than 500 German and Swiss people ages 70 to 103. They found those who offered to look after their grandchildren were still alive ten years later, but those who did not provide occasional care died within five years. And the affect wasn’t just limited to grandkids. Half of the childless older adults who provided emotional support to others lived for another seven years. Researcher Ralph Hertwig says, “A moderate level of care-giving involvement does seem to have positive effects on health.” (Daily Mail
