Study: Reading Classic Literature Makes You Better At Recognizing Emotions

Reading a classic book doesn’t just make you look intelligent, but it makes you more emotionally intelligent. Psychologists from the New School for Social Research identified participants who tended to read more literary fiction, and showed them, as well as those who read less, photos of actor’s eyes. All were asked what emotion the actor was expressing. The more literary fiction a participant read, the better they were at identifing the emotion. It’s thought that the complicated characters in the classic stories challenge the mind in a way that chick-lit, crime mysteries, sci-fi, and other types of fiction do not. (Daily Mail
