A new study has found the surprising to many result that old people are actually happier than young adults in their 20’s and 30’s. Researchers analyzed data and survey answers from more than 1,500 people ages 21 to 99 and found that while older people were physically more disabled and had more cognitive impairment, their mental health was better. It was people in their 20’s and 30’s who reported having the highest levels of depression, anxiety and stress, plus the lowest levels of happiness, satisfaction and well-being. Older people were the happiest. Study author Dr. Dilip Jeste, a geriatric psychiatrist and director of the Center on Healthy Aging at the University of California, San Diego, said that older people are much better able to brush off small stresses and have accumulated the wisdom of being emotionally stable and compassionate, knowing themselves and being able to make smart social decisions.
