Deadliest Foods for Cats and Dogs

A recent study looked at different foods that are poisonous for cats and dogs, and found the top seven that kill the most pets every year . . .

1. Chocolate. It’s toxic for dogs AND cats. But with most of these foods, you have to worry more about dogs, because cats won’t usually wolf down a whole chocolate bar.

2. The artificial sweetener, Xylitol. It’s used in sugar-free gum, candy, and even toothpaste. And it makes their blood sugar plummet.

3. Onions and garlic. They have a compound that breaks down red blood cells in cats and dogs. And it’s not usually lethal, but even a little bit can make them sick.

4. Alcohol. It basically affects them the same way it affects us, but it’s a lot easier for a dog or cat to get alcohol poisoning.

5. Grapes and raisins. Just a handful can cause kidney failure in some dogs. And there’s no way to tell how YOUR dog will react, so don’t take any chances.

6. Hops from brewing beer. They can cause a super-high fever. And more people are doing home brewing now, so it’s more common than it used to be.

7. Macadamia nuts. Just one nut can cause problems in some dogs, and symptoms include vomiting, shaking, and a fever. But it’s usually not deadly. (
