Mars Makes Closest Approach To Earth In 11 Years Today

Is there life on Mars? Last Sunday (May 22nd) Mars, Earth and  the sun were all arranged in a straight line, but that wasn’t as close as Mars is going to get. Today (May 30th,) at 5:35 P.M. Eastern Time, Mars will be the closest it has been to Earth since October 5th, 2005. It will be just 46,762,695 miles away from Earth, or about half of one astronomical unit (AU.) (One AU is the average distance from the Earth to the sun– about 93 million miles.) Using just an amateur telescope, you unfortunately won’t be able to see much, but surely those with more powerful tools will get some amazing photos of the Red Planet. (Fox
