Can Handwriting Make You Smarter?

Modern technology may make paper and pen seem obsolete, but new studies show that handwriting appears to focus classroom attention and boost learning in a way that typing notes on a keyboard does not. Researchers from Princeton University and the University of California found that compared to those who typed their notes, participants who wrote them out by hand appeared to learn better, retain information longer, and more readily grasp new ideas. Cognitive psychologist Michael Friedman explains, “Note-taking is a pretty dynamic process. You are transforming what you hear in your mind.” Another expert adds, “All of that effort [of handwriting] helps you learn.” Still, research shows that taking notes in any form is more beneficial than taking none at all.
